The Fila has vigor and authority to its elastic pacing gait. A very large, square, heavy and massive head holds deep, sad eyes. His honesty in his antipathy to strangers invading his territory or threatening his master seems more awe-inspiring than the word 'Ojeriza,' used to describe the Fila's aversion to strangers. Despite the no-nonsense attitude of the Fila, its devotion to its family is legendary. It does not permit familiarity of strangers. Clearly extensive socialization and obedience training are essential to give this breed a frame of reference for normal human interaction, so it will not mistake a pat on the back of its master, by a friendly stranger, as an attack. Filas are easily 'read' when they are reacting to a perceived threat. The cold-eyed stare, lowering of head, readiness, long body posture, low growl, all tell the world: "Beware, I am watching your every move!" Filas should never be judged solely on appearance. Not only should a quality Fila be beautiful but it is essential they be of good character and temperament and have structural soundness. Due to the intensity of this breed's temperament, clearly they are not suitable for just everyone. Educated and responsible owners are a must.

July l992 was the date of the founding of the Fila Brasileiro Association, otherwise known as the FBA. The state of Texas issued the incorporation papers on February 24, 1993. The Fila Brasileiro Association, Inc., follows the procedures and breed standard # 225 of l976, revised on l984, of the Brazilian Confederation of Cynophile (CBKC). The FBA will not tolerate the internal promotion by any other organizations or individuals who support standards other than that of the original version # 225 of l976, revised in l984, issued by CBKC. The FBA is a non-profit organization that is truly interested in promoting and preserving the Fila Brasileiro breed according to the original standard of the breed. The FBA has no registry of its own. It will honor the registries of CBKC and FCPR (Federacion Canofila de Puerto Rico). The FBA Delegates, representing each state, and many foreign countries, may promote matches, specialty shows, working competitions, seminars, meetings, social activities, and distribute information on the breed and Association. The FILA DIGEST is their means of communication. It contains letters, articles, reports, health information, and show announcements. An annual fiscal report will be published in the newsletter as well minutes of all meetings, (General annual meeting or Special meeting). The FBA will not allow non-owners to vote.

The Fila Brasileiro is unique. The natural protective instinct that has been lost through the ages in most guard dogs is very much alive in the Fila. Their natural aggressiveness towards strangers is surprising for a dog which is very humble and docile towards its owners. The Fila is intelligent and sensitive. He is the first one to know when you are in a bad mood or ill. He will follow you in his gentle and smooth way, place his big head on your lap, or poke you with his nose. No one can tell by looking at this gentle and large dog that he will react with great aggressiveness if he feels that someone or something is a menace to his owner or his territory. In Brazil the Fila's faithfulness is a legend. Brazilians say, "Faithful as a Fila." In 1946, when the official standard was established, members of this breed became show dogs. The Protection Dog

A person should never select a dog beyond their capabilities to control — either physically or psychologically. For example, even though the Rottweiler is a highly intelligent and friendly breed (they excel as therapy dogs), they are powerful and stubborn, so they would be a poor choice for someone who is frail or weak; conversely, the Doberman Pinscher is a relatively compact and lightweight breed, yet they are too high strung and energetic for someone who is timid or slow. Exotic protection breeds (such as the Fila Brasileiro, Perro Dogo Canario, and Timbershepherd) should be left to the experts, as their temperament and strength require a master dog handler to control.

Temperament Test

It is a must that all Filas after 12 months of age pass a temperament test in order to obtain a registered championship title. All champions must have a certificate of approval from the temperament test. The temperament test is made available at most all specialty shows. The test includes:

1.) Attack with a stick. The Fila is supposed to attack in front of the handler, without being coached, and the handler is to remain in his position. The handler is not to touch the Fila.

2.) Shooting test. Blanks are to be fired approximately 5 meters from the dog. The Fila should express attention, self confidence, and self assurance.

3.) During all performances in the ring, the judge will analyze the behavior and temperament of the Fila, paying attention to his expression. During the test, the following should be observed:
a.) Dislike by the Fila of strangers.

b.) Self assurance, courage, determination, and bravery of each individual Fila.

Temperament

The Fila Brasileiro was bred to guard the ranches in Brazil. Today they are still used as guardian dogs. The breed has a natural distrust, hatred, and aversion to strangers. This is known as "ojeriza". Ojeriza is a natural breed characteristic that is desirable for a guard dog and much cultivated in its country of origin, where in order to gain a championship all Filas must pass an attack test. The Fila is to be confident, faithful, brave, tolerant of all the family members and to display ojeriza towards strangers. Timidity should not be tolerated in a guard dog, and cowardice is a disqualification in the Fila. The Fila is a naturally protective guardian requiring no training for this aspect of its character. The Fila is a large, strong dog capable of serious damage in the hands of an irresponsible individual. The natural "ojeriza", or hatred of strangers, develops at different ages in different Filas. Some Filas are wary of strangers as pups, and some do not show the inclination to protect until as late as two years of age. Always be aware, because your cute little puppy can and will become a Fila overnight, and usually lets its unsuspecting family know this when they least expect it. Obedience training and absolute control are a must with the Fila. They are naturally quiet and well mannered, but each dog must be evaluated and trained properly to ensure that they are not a danger when out in public or in the company of strangers. It is best to put the Fila up when company is over visiting. The Fila is predictable but visitors are not. Most people visiting think the Fila is just another breed of dog and that they can treat it just like any other breed of dog. This is how most accidents occur. The natural ojeriza is a trait unique to the Fila Brasileiro. The will to defend and protect is an innate behavior, not a trained response. Therefore, early socialization is important, and obedience is a must. The Fila must understand who is alpha.

Do's and Don'ts

Never: Under estimate your Fila Brasileiro.

Always: Have your Fila approach a guest or friend rather than having them approach your Fila. Basically, let your Fila pet the human first.

Never: Assume someone heard you. Even in a ring situation, never assume a judge won’t approach your Fila in a fast or assertive way. Never assume someone heard you say “Wait!” or “Just a minute!”

Always: Be aware of everything around you when out with your Fila. Make sure you see what he may deem to be a threat before he does. This will allow you to be able to stop him should the need arise. Sometimes just someone running quickly toward you can be taken the wrong way by your Fila. Turn his head or assure him that there is NOT a problem.

Never: Assume that your Fila is so well trained that he will not break a command if he feels the need to protect you.

Always: Learn to know how to read your dog. All dogs generally have a warning sign that they are alert. Sometimes it’s the ears, tail, body posture, or even a change in the eye! Don’t ever assume that because his tail is wagging, he won’t bite.

Never: Make the mistake of thinking that a fat puppy is healthy. Being overweight during this rapid growth period will cause all kinds of problems in the joints and muscles.

Always: Be prepared for lots of love, every day!

Breed Restriction

A restriction means the dog owner is limited as to what their dog can do, where it go, how it can get there and who it can have contact with. There are also usually special licensing and insurance requirements. Right now, in various locations in the United States , there are laws restricting at least 11 different breeds and mixes of those breeds.

What are the usual restrictions that are imposed?
Restrictions vary from locale to locale, but common restrictions are as follows:

Muzzling of the dog in public.
Use of a chain leash.
Dog can only be walked by someone 18 years or older.
Dog must wear a special collar or tag that denotes it as a dangerous dog.
Posting of dangerous dog warning signs at house entrances.
A requirement for extra liability insurance (usually ranging from $50,000 -$100,000).
Higher licensing fees (up to $500.00 per year for an unaltered dog, even a show dog).
The dog is not allowed contact with children, even as a puppy.
Mandatory tattooing, and/or microchipping.
Mandatory neutering/spaying.

While these are not inappropriate restrictions for a dog designated dangerous as a result of behavior, they are not appropriate for dogs designated dangerous solely by breed.

Most of the actions you see dogs doing in movies are simply an assembly of simple tricks. By teaching your dog to do each trick, you can have him/her capable of being a movie dog (or just a fun pet). Some of these tricks help the dog in other sports such as agility and in obedience. Likewise, agility work can be incorporated into movie work. For example, dogs that can jump obstacles can be taught to jump in and out of moving cars, leap over people or other dogs, or jump in and out of windows. A-frame work can be used to teach the dog to go over fences or other high obstacles and dog walk training can be used to teach dog to walk along narrow walls, etc. They use the circle obstacle with the hole covered with saran wrap to teach the dogs to jump through a window. This list doesn't include tricks such as retrievals which are used often in movies or bite work. Bite work should only be done by a trained handler as you must do it properly to be effective. None of these tricks require special equipment. These tricks are meant to be fun for you and your dog. There are many ways to teach the same trick. Use the one that works for you and your dog.

Working Weekend

6TH ANNUAL April Working Weekend!

All responsible dog owners are welcome! Every year is better than the year before! 2005 had additional stations, TT/HIT challenges, improved breed evaluations, and more! Hosted by Eanlo Kennels and SouthLand Farms in Zebulon, Georgia April 8,9, & 10 2005.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Children are welcome but please remember there will be many people and dogs on the grounds and children must be supervised by parents or be crated (they do not provide babysitting). Dogs must be leashed or crated at all times! Uncontrolled dogs or children will be asked to leave for the safety of all concerned.
COST:

$85 for one human and 2 dogs for the weekend. If you have additional humans or dogs participating in events add $20 each. This is all inclusive of all events and includes food on Saturday (lunch and dinner) and Sunday Brunch! If your prepaid entry is received before March 15th you will receive a $10 discount. So save some money and send in your registration today. Humans attending without dogs will be charged $25 for the weekend. (If you plan on attending please notify them via email so they may have an approximate head count ensuring enough food for everyone)!

FINE PRINT:

You are responsible for your dog, including any damage the dog does to people or property, including cows, — so make sure your home owners insurance is paid up or don’t let your dog bite anyone or tear anything up. They are happy to say that in 5 years they have had no significant injuries and this year makes number 6. Everyone participating must sign a release form on site. SAFETY IS FOREMOST AT THEIR EVENTS. If you are looking to buy or sell a dog, Working Weekend is a great place to meet representatives from most of the US kennels — and know that your potential buyers have been educated about the breed. All dogs that are brought to the event must be current on vaccinations, free of fleas and parasites, and in good health! They discourage bringing puppies under 12 weeks or unvaccinated pups because of the great exposure to multiple dogs - you risk the health of your pups in such case.

The Fila Brasileiro is a descendant of the 15th-century English Mastiff, Bloodhound, and the Olde Spanish bulldogges. From the Bloodhound, he inherited loose skin and keen sense of smell. The Mastiff contributed compact body, courage and an ever-alert disposition. The Olde Spanish Bulldogges added the unforgiving impetuous temperament. In early history Filas held escaped slaves unharmed for the master. Filas are used as cattle drovers, as well as for the hunting of the jaguar, boar and bear. They are also excellent home and ranch guard dogs. They are not typically animal-aggressive, but will defend it's family and property at all costs.

The Fila Brasileiro is a wonderful breed developed in Brazil, the loyalty of these dogs to their owners is impossible to describe. Fila means “to hold” in Portuguese. Filas are great family dogs, amazingly gentle and loving with the family unit. However, they do not like strangers, because of this last characteristic, a Fila is not a dog for everyone. Their main function is that of a guard & personal protection dog. They have very strong protective instincts, therefore need no training in order to perform the job for which they were created.
